A clear, simple guide to autism for parents: what it is, the signs to look for, what causes it, how it is identified and how therapy helps children learn and grow.
Autism is one of the most searched topics by parents in Bangladesh, and also one of the most misunderstood. This guide explains, in simple words, what autism is, what it is not, and how children with autism can learn and grow with the right support.
What is autism?
Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), is a lifelong difference in how the brain develops. It mainly affects how a child communicates, relates to other people and experiences the world through the senses. It is called a “spectrum” because every child is different: some children speak fluently, others use few or no words; some need a lot of support every day, others need less.
Autism is not caused by parenting, and it is not a disease that spreads. With early, individual support, children with autism make real progress in communication, learning and independence.
Common signs of autism
Social communication
- little eye contact or rarely sharing smiles and interests
- not responding to their name, even though hearing is fine
- late talking, or repeating words instead of using them to communicate
- not pointing to show or ask for things
- finding it hard to play with other children
Behaviour and senses
- repeated movements such as hand-flapping, rocking or spinning
- strong interest in particular objects or topics
- getting very upset by small changes in routine
- being very sensitive to sounds, light, touch or food textures, or seeking strong sensations
Signs are often noticed between 1 and 3 years of age. One or two signs alone do not mean a child has autism. Read more in our guide to the early signs of autism.
What causes autism?
There is no single cause. Research shows that genetics play a large part, together with factors that affect early brain development before birth. Autism is not caused by vaccines, by screens, or by anything parents did wrong.
How is autism identified?
There is no blood test for autism. It is identified by watching how a child communicates, plays and behaves, and by talking with parents about the child’s development. A formal diagnosis is made by a qualified doctor or specialist. A child development and autism assessment at a therapy centre shows your child’s strengths and needs and the right therapy plan, and our team will guide you if a formal diagnosis is needed.
Which therapies help?
- Speech and language therapy for understanding, words and other ways to communicate
- ABA to teach communication, play and daily skills in small steps
- Occupational therapy for sensory needs, hand skills and daily routines
- 1:1 special education and group programs for learning and social skills
The earlier support starts, the better: see why early intervention matters.
Can autism be cured?
Autism is not something to “cure”; it is part of who a child is. Be careful of anyone who promises a cure, special diets or quick fixes. What works is steady, individual therapy and support at home, which helps children communicate, learn and live more independently.
