How this helps your child
- Muscle strength
- Flexibility and coordination
- Calming sensory input
- Confidence in water
Hydrotherapy is therapy in warm water. The water supports a child’s body, makes movement easier and offers calming sensory input, so many children enjoy it while building strength and coordination.
How hydrotherapy can help
- Improves muscle strength, balance and coordination
- Makes stretching and movement easier for children with low or high muscle tone
- Provides calming sensory input that many children with autism find soothing
- Builds confidence, body awareness and water safety
What a session involves
A therapist stays with your child in the water throughout. Sessions use play, songs and floating toys to practise specific movements set out in your child’s plan. Hydrotherapy usually works alongside physiotherapy or occupational therapy rather than replacing them.
Safety first
Every child is assessed before starting, and sessions are adapted to their comfort and any medical needs. Please tell us about seizures, ear problems or skin conditions before the first session.
