What Happens at a Child Development Assessment?

Booking your child’s first assessment can feel stressful. Here is what happens on the day, how to prepare, and what you will take home.

A development assessment is the first step to understanding your child and getting the right support. It is not a test your child can pass or fail. It is a friendly, play-based meeting to learn about their strengths and needs.

Before the assessment

  • Write down your main worries and any questions
  • Bring previous reports, prescriptions or school notes
  • Bring a favourite toy or snack to help your child feel comfortable
  • Choose a time when your child is usually rested, not hungry or sleepy

On the day

Talking with you. The therapist asks about pregnancy and birth, early milestones, health, sleep, eating, behaviour and how your child plays and communicates. You know your child best, so your observations are very important.

Playing with your child. Through toys, books, puzzles and movement games, the therapist observes communication, social interaction, attention, play, fine and gross motor skills and sensory responses. Your child stays with you, and breaks are fine.

Discussing what we saw. At the end, the therapist explains the findings in simple words and answers your questions.

What you take home

  • A clear picture of your child’s strengths and the areas that need support
  • Recommended therapies, such as speech therapy, ABA or occupational therapy, and how often
  • First goals and simple activities to start at home
  • Advice on whether a medical review, for example by a child development doctor, is also recommended

Does an assessment give an autism diagnosis?

A therapy assessment shows what support will help, whatever the cause. A formal diagnosis of autism is made by a qualified doctor or specialist. If it is needed, we will tell you and guide you on where to go. Therapy can start while you wait.
