Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is one of the most researched approaches for supporting children with autism. Here is how it works.
Applied Behavior Analysis, or ABA, is an approach that helps children learn new skills by breaking them into small, achievable steps and encouraging progress with positive reinforcement.
How ABA works
- The therapist assesses the child’s current skills and sets individual goals
- Skills are taught in small steps, often through play
- Progress is recorded in every session so the plan can be adjusted
- Parents learn the same strategies to use at home
Skills ABA can support
ABA can help with communication, social skills, following routines, self-care such as dressing and eating, and reducing behaviours that make everyday life harder. Good ABA is respectful, motivating and built around what matters to the child and family.
